Twin Ram Automatic Baler Boosts Efficiency at Re-Gen Waste

A fully integrated baling solution has helped Newry-based Re-Gen Waste reduce ship loading times by up to 5 hours.

The twin ram automatic baler, supplied by CK International, produces larger and more consistent SRF (Solid Recovered Fuel) bales. Fewer bales per container mean much faster loading.

The new baler operates at Re-Gen’s 300,000-tonnes-per-year facility, which features state-of-the-art optical sorting, ballistic separators, eddy currents, and steel magnets.

Faster Loading at the Port

The new baler produces consistent bale lengths within 100mm, allowing material handlers to lift two or four bales at a time. Identical bale lengths make stacking easier and speed up loading in the ship’s hull.

We programmed a bite-sized calculator into the CKTR121 baler to ensure the correct amount of material fills each bale chamber. This guarantees consistent bale size for every bale.

Customised to Suit

We worked closely with Re-Gen Waste’s engineering team to understand their specific requirements. This led to several custom baler modifications.

We achieved 20T/hr throughput and upgraded their previous 120T model to 160T compaction force to meet Re-Gen’s bale density requirements. Since SRF material is light and flocculent, we added pre-press compaction to maximise bale material. Each bale now weighs 1.2 tonnes.

The baler integrates fully into the MRF plant and with the Crosswrap system. Bales move from the twin ram baler to the wrapper via a moving bale table. The system now operates efficiently, even in confined spaces.

Circulation of Clean Air

We installed an air cooler outside the building, pumping clean air through the baler. SRF waste produces dust, and the baler can operate up to 20 hours per day. This setup reduces overheating and ensures fresh, clean air circulates.

We also built a special air-conditioned container for the baler control panel to prevent contamination.

Remote Management

The fully automatic baler features an integrated data management system. Re-Gen’s team can remotely monitor bale production, track consistency, and detect real-time issues. This feature is crucial for managing such a large facility efficiently.
